What is Fascia?

Release time:2020-09-04 Views:927

Fascia is a continuous network of connective tissue that surrounds, supports and connects almost every structure of the body. The muscles, nerves, blood vessels and internal organs all have fascia surrounding them. The fascia supports these structures and allows them to move freely as we move. It also helps to guide movements and is now thought to aid in the coordination of various aspects of bodily function, including enveloping and isolating the muscles of the body, providing structural support and protection.

There are two basic classifications of fascia——superficial and deep. Superficial fascia lies underneath the skin where it helps maintain body temperature, aids in metabolic processes and protects blood vessels and nerves. Deep fascia forms a honeycomb-like network within the muscles and it also extends out from specific areas to connect all of the muscles and associated tissues around the joints and all along the arms, legs, head and trunk of the body. In this way, it interconnects the entire body. Deep fascia allows muscles to move and glide freely over adjacent muscles and associated structures.

Fascia plays an important role in the support and function of our bodies. In the normal healthy state, the fascia is relaxed and wavy in configuration. It has the ability to stretch and move without restriction. When one experiences physical trauma, emotional trauma, scarring, or inflammation, however, the fascia loses its pliability. It becomes tight, restricted, and a source of tension to the rest of the body. Trauma, such as a fall, car accident, surgery or just habitual poor posture and repetitive stress injuries has cumulative effects on the body. The changes trauma causes in the fascial system influences comfort and function of our body. Fascial restrictions can exert excessive pressure causing all kinds of symptoms producing pain, headaches or restriction of motion. Fascial restrictions affect our flexibility and stability, and are a determining factor in our ability to withstand stress and perform daily activities.
